jaybw.William J. O'Hern

Spend a few moments with a true outdoorsman and take a journey into the past for a look back at a precious time that should never be forgotten.  Reminisce a time in life when life itself, still contained true meaning and hardship could very well lead to life and death situations.  William "Jay" O'Hern has captured the essence of life in the Adirondack mountains during a period that is fast vanishing into the analogs of history.  The extensive research and large collections of authentic photographs make this a treasure for anyone that loves the lore of bygone days or the Adirondack mountain area.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

lwnbook His recent book "Life With Noah", portrays stories and adventures of Richard Smith with Noah John Rondeau, famous hermit of the Adirondack mountains.  20 years of research are brought together into one exceptionally fine, hard cover book filled with hunting, fishing, trapping and outdoors stories of a lifetime of men that lived only by the means they could manage or from the gifts Mother Nature and an occasionally passer by, where so willing to provide.  Honest humble men seeking only the simplistic joy of everyday life in itself.

Jay has promised The Hunting-Trail a special story-telling documentary about the hunters shown on the book jacket.  To be sure no golden prize would be rewarded to the hermit of Cold River for his fiddle playing that evening. However, the reward of friendship that developed between "Red Beard" and Noah -- a bond cemented by respect for the wildlife, each other's self-worth and the love they shared living in wilds of the Cold River country -- outweighed "all the tea in China." The outdoor's men lived their entire life unimpressed with worldly wealth. To them, a bond of friendship meant more than material rewards of success.

To set the stage and get you ready, this month we bring you a recently published work of Jay's entitled "Red Beard's Cabin", which first appeared in the magazine of the Adirondack Mountain Club, Sept./Oct. 1998, © 1998. It is reprinted here with permission for your enjoyment.
