their in the first place, when used in conjunction with other popular DeLorme mapping software.
Plug in this handy unit to your hand held computer or laptop and your ready to
head to just about any place on Earth! You'll never get lost again. On road or off, we found this unit to be one fine addition to the dash board (while on the
road) or back pack on the trail and definitely worth it's weight in gold.
Our testing of this product has been very extensive and
many of the features offered put to the test to see just how it would stack up. On a recent road trip from Salt Lake City, Utah to just outside of Carson, Washington, I
was totally amazed at the accuracy and ease of use for this item. I received a Palm Pilot IIIe from 3Com Inc., to test with this unit. (click here to read the review on the
Palm Pilot) Before leaving for the trip, I visited the DeLorme CyberMaps web site, and used this great service to download route and driving directions for my
trip. I also used the DeLorme 3D TopoQuads (read the review), to locate and download to the hand held unit, the maps for the area I was to be hunting while
in Washington. I loaded my gear, strapped the Earthmate GPS to my dashboard, and hit the road!
I left Utah early, hoping to arrive with a little daylight to locate the remote camp,
situated in Gifford Pichot National Forest, in South Western Washington. Being an ex-truck driver, I did not really need the GPS unit for the majority of the trip
but know from past experience, getting into a small town, late at night, can make getting additional directions from local folks a task better not relied on. No
fear!! Earthmate to the rescue. I was able to follow my position, on screen (of the Palm Pilot unit) at all times.
I arrived at the town of Carson, Washington slightly after dusk and without one
wrong turn. I inquired, just for peace of mind, as to the location of the turn off to get to the camp, for my hunt at a local grocery store. I should have just kept
going. It had been raining steadily since I hit the Oregon State line, and increasing in intensity as I continued my travel West. By the time I reached
Carson, it was a true Pacific Coast down pour. I considered spending the night in town and making the final few miles into the remote country, once daylight hit
in the morning. Still being fairly early, I took my chances and figured, one way to find out how good this information is, and headed on to camp.
About a half an hour later, I pulled directly up to camp, approximately 13 miles off the beaten path and deep in the heart of the Gifford Pinchot National
Forest. As a very wet and surprised Guide appeared from one of the tents, I asked if this was Big Sky Adventures, almost afraid of the answer, and found I had made the trip, in the dark, pouring
rain storm, without one wrong turn..... Even I was amazed.
Earthmate has been developed in partnership with Rockwell/Conexant, the
company that pioneered GPS satellite technology. It's was of use, make it the perfect tool for those that are easily confused using traditional GPS unit. You
"see" where you are, making it easy to pick out landmarks, rivers, or streams and stay out of trouble, as your position is tracked on the screen of the hand
held or laptop computer. (Editor note. We do not recommend packing your laptop into your back pack, but hey, it will work!)
DeLorme Earthmate GPS Unit - Taking GPS and Hand Held computing to new
levels, this is a must have for any outdoors man that get's off the beaten path! The ease of adding this unit to most popular hand helds, makes your hand held
a tool that is truly an invaluable resource and takes your orienteering skills to a whole new playing field. RATING *****
