Time for a new paint job? Not for the Trail Master! Now there is an alternative to having a sub rate paint job done to the ol' hunting rig, and you'll be the envy of the deer camp this season.
Camoclad camouflage systems rocks! What more can I say. After
working with this product on several occasions now (see the Camoclad review posted here), and for 4 days while recently wrapping my truck, I
feel I can honestly say this is one of the best products on the market for adding after market camouflage to just about anything you can think of.
I received a kit for my 2000 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab 4X4, with sleeper and went right to work. I had estimated it was going to be about a 2-3 day job as this was
something I have not had a lot of experience at. All trim pieces on the truck where removed, these included fender flares, bug shield, mirrors, camper shell,
tail gate and Nissan decals. I then washed the truck with a synthetic car wash solution, (it is recommended that you do not use regular dish soap as it leaves a
residue), and dried the truck with a lint free drying shammy.
Once the truck had dried for a few hours to let residual water
evaporate off, it was time to put the final cleaning wipe down on the truck. This process takes any girt and grime off the paint surface to ensure a good adhesion. I used Sherwin Williams R7 K 156
Sher-Will-Clean, but DuPont's Prep-Sol Brand Solvent Cleaner 3919S may also be used to wipe the substrate surface. Many solvents cannot be used; therefore these recommendations must be strictly adhered to. (Please refer to the materials
supplied with the kit for other products that may be used.) Dry the surface with a lint free towel before the solvent evaporates. I found wiping down smaller
sections and then drying them quickly to work the best.
I again let the truck set for about an hour to allow for any moisture to evaporate. Then is was time to get serious!
I decided to start with the tail gate
to get a feel for how this was going to go. I had a large section to cut out for the center of the tail gate and wanted to keep it in one piece. I started at the bottom and worked the material up toward the top.
Once I reached the panel I need to cut around I slowly tacked the material down as I trimmed around the panel with a razor blade. The tail gate was done in no time!
I had already noticed the reaction to the camo as people drove past my home and about ran off the rode looking. This was going to be a hit here in Utah for sure.
By the time I had the tail gate finished up, day light on the first day was fast fading away. Day 2 found me excited and ready about 6 AM to get a good start
on it. Progress was slow as I wanted the best final results and was willing to take the time needed to do this job right. 5 sheets made it on the truck this day
before the sun again drifted out of the sky and the moon rose apon my half camo'd truck.
Day 3 again was an early start and the product performed flawlessly. I
did find that it was much easier to work with the product when the sun had heated things up over the 80 degree mark. Especially when working with compound corners and
indents that the product needed to be worked down into. For really tough spots, I used a hair blow dyer to heat the product up and make it more plyable.
By the end of day 3, to hot to handle. We decided with the over 100 degree tempuratures, we would move to a friends house and try putting the camo on in
the shade today. I had almost the entire truck done, one sheet left one the roof and the sleeper shell and I was done! Man, I had had just about every person in
my neighborhood stop past to see the new "paint job". To my surprize, most people really thought I was somehow painting the truck with the camo design.
Day 4! The wrap up....
Day 4, finish the truck, wrap the sleeper and put the final touches
and trim back on the truck. I put my wife to work, well.. she really worked the entire time helping out... popping bubbles that formed under the material as we laid it down while I finished up putting the body
trim back together.
By mid day, we had most of the tasks complete and a smile began to creep across my face that is still there today. What a great finished product! We had
taken the the time to match up patterns from sheet to sheet, trim corners with a very carefull hand and it showed in the end results. Unless you are standing right
on top of the truck, you would swear it is painted on not stuck on.
I have to say, Camoclad is one of the best products I have yet to review. There are some things that come along that just really work and this is one. Easy to
use, so many different applications it can be used for, and affordably priced, this product is a winner!
