We recently tested the Palm Pilot IIIe Special Edition, combined with the DeLorme EarthMate GPS unit, on a recent elk hunting trip in Washington State.
And I must tell you, I might still be there, without this handy unit...
The area we hunted is located in the Gifford Pinchot Nation Forest. Our base
camp was within 35 miles of Mount Saint Helens, giving you an idea of the area, it is covered with lava flow areas, that virtually render a compass useless. The
mineral content in the soil is so high in many areas, a compass will literally just spin freely in circles. I had not hunted the area before and had also been provided with a complete set of DeLorme 3D TopoQuads for the state of Washington and download the hunting area to the Palm Pilot before I left home.
The cover in this area is very thick as well, making landmark navigation almost
impossible as well. Using this handy set of tools, made navigation very simple indeed, in the toughest, thickest areas I dared to venture into. Although I did
use good judgment at all times, I did get into a few areas I normally would not have been comfortable in an unfamiliar area, without the use of the tools at hand!
 Once you have loaded the maps for an area into the hand help Palm Pilot, and plugged in and obtained a signal lock from the EarthMate GPS, you location is
displayed, including your position on the topographical map displayed on the Palm Pilot screen. You can actually "see" where you are at all times, even if you can only understand the most
basic topographical map. Marking your landmarks, or point of interest is a simple point and click away. I found this one of the easiest tool I have ever used in the field for navigation.
Then, disconnect the GPS and held back to business, and the Palm Pilot is
ready for action. I found the Palm Pilot IIIe such a useful tool in tracking phone numbers, business contacts and appointments, expense logs and so much
more, that I purchased the demo for an associate of the company and then purchased two Palm Pilot IIix models for my wife and myself too.
In the month and a half, since I first began my review process, I have tracked
more than enough in business expenses, that where not before being accurately tracked, to pay for all three units. And found more uses for this handy item, that
I had ever imagined possible. The programs available for the hand held units are endless.
 If you travel into the outdoors, or own a business, need to track information on the
fly and then transfer it back to your computer once you get home, or one of the hundred other uses we have found for our Palm Pilots, your life will never be the same once you open the door to hand held
computing. Not just for the pencil pushing geek anymore, this item just very well help get you out of a very bad situation in the field as well. The Hunting Trail Staff HIGHLY recommend the 3Com Palm Pilot as an addition to your outdoor gearbag.
